Letters vs. characters

A character counter measures everything you type — spaces, digits, punctuation, and emoji all add to the total. A letter counter ignores all of that and reports only alphabetic characters. "Hello, world!" has 13 characters but only 10 letters.

The counter recognises letters from every Unicode script, so it works for English, Spanish, French, German, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese, and more without any setup.

When letter counts help

  • Word puzzles — Wordle, Scrabble, crosswords, anagram hunts.
  • Name and username length checks (alphabetic-only systems).
  • Language learners measuring vocabulary spelling.
  • Checking acronyms and abbreviation lengths.

Need spaces and punctuation included? Use the Character Counter. Counting whole words instead? Use the Word Count Checker or the Word Counter.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a letter?
Any alphabetic character in any script — A–Z, lowercase, accented letters (é, ñ, ü), and non-Latin scripts (Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, CJK). The counter uses the Unicode 'Letter' category, so it works for any language.
Do numbers, spaces, or punctuation count?
No. Letter count is strictly letters. Spaces, digits (0–9), punctuation, emoji, and symbols are ignored. If you want a count that includes everything, use the Character Counter instead.
How is this different from a character counter?
A character counter measures the size of the string — every key press, including spaces and punctuation. A letter counter only counts alphabetic characters, which is what you want for word puzzles, Scrabble/Wordle, name-length checks, and language study.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Counting runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and your text auto-clears after five idle minutes.
